What To Eat And Not Eat To Reduce Allergy Symptoms

by For Content

One of the challenges of battling allergies is that many of the treatments for this condition carry with them very annoying side effects. Fortunately, what you eat can also have an impact on your allergies and you won't have to worry about severe side effects:

Eat the Right Meat Products

If you have a diet that is higher in Omega-3 fatty acids, you are less likely to suffer from severe allergies. Fish are usually the best sources of this nutrient. Try having a tuna salad with some spinach. When getting your protein and iron, opt for chicken rather than beef if you need a break from seafood. The trans oleic acid found in chicken is responsible for reducing allergy symptoms.

Eat the Right Vegetables

Eat a lot of dark and leafy vegetables. Yellow and orange vegetables also often contain nutrients that help alleviate allergy symptoms thanks to cartenoids and vitamin C. Mixing all of these into a salad is one of the fastest ways to reap these benefits, especially if you mix in some flax seeds filled with Omega-3.

You can also cut up some chicken and toss it in. Spicy foods can help clear your nasal passages. This includes horseradish, hot mustard and chilli peppers. However, these will also usually cause your nose to run quite a bit and the helpful benefits of eating spicy foods are often only temporary.

Have the Right Sweets

If you have a sweet tooth, you might want to try some local honey. While it hasn't been scientifically proven yet, many allergy sufferers swear by local honey as an allergy remedy. Those who include more probiotics in their diet have fewer allergies.

Probiotics are a type of bacteria that can be found in certain types of yogurts and supplements. Children who receive probiotics are less likely to have allergies as adults. Even better is that it is easy to have a cup of yogurt to start your day with.

Don't Eat These Foods

Just as there are foods that will help alleviate your allergies, there are also foods that will exacerbate them. Avoid consuming:

  • sugar

  • wheat

  • peanuts

  • chocolate

  • caffeine

Fortunately, some of these aren't good for you when consumed in excess anyway.

While changing your diet to alleviate allergy symptoms, you should still consult with an allergy specialist and possibly a nutritionist. Just make sure that you are fully aware of the side effects involved in each treatment and you'll be better equipped to enjoy spring. To learn more, contact a company like Diane L. Ozog, MD, SC.
