3 Things To Discuss With Your OBGYN Before Delivering Your Baby

by For Content

Delivering your baby is a very big deal, so it is crucial that you feel as prepared as possible before the big day. A great way to prepare yourself is to talk with your OBGYN. This article will discuss 3 things to discuss with your OBGYN before delivering your baby.

Getting An Epidural

If you are trying to determine whether or not you want an epidural during delivery, it is very important that you talk with your OBGYN. They will be able to explain to you what it feels like to get an epidural, what the expected effects are, what the side effects are, and more. They will also explain to you the anesthesiologists' schedules at the hospital, so you know how long you may or may not have to wait for your epidural. Having all of this information beforehand will allow you to make a more level-headed decision during labor.

Whether You Want To Tear Or Have An Episiotomy

Sometimes when the baby comes out, they either come out so quickly or are so large that your vaginal opening tears in the process. However, some OBGYNs find that cutting this area instead of letting it tear is better because it leaves a cleaner and more uniform incision. This can make it easier to stitch up and some find that it heals faster with less scarring. If you want one or the other, then it is important that you talk with your OBGYN beforehand to get their opinion on the matter.

What Intervention Methods You Can Expect

Sometimes during delivery things don't necessarily go as planned, so it is important that you know what your OBGYN is going to do in this situation. There are several different types of interventions that can be used, but not all OBGYNs support these methods or approach them the same way. For example, they may explain to you that they recommend getting a pitocin drip to speed up labor if you haven't progressed after a certain amount of time, or they will recommend getting a C-section if you aren't progressing, the baby changes position, the baby's heart rate is dropping, etc. They may also have different methods for delivering your baby if the baby is having a hard time coming out of the birth canal, which should also be discussed. Talking to them beforehand is a great way to prepare yourself for what could potentially happen so you aren't as scared or surprised during delivery.
