Holistic Care Approaches To Battling The Onset Of Alzheimer's

by For Content

People becoming forgetful as they age is not uncommon, but it is one of the most common signs of Alzheimer's. If you notice that a parent is becoming increasingly forgetful, it is time to seek out Alzheimer's disease treatment services. Treatment from a doctor may require medicine and therapy, but there are some holistic approaches that you can take to help to stave off Alzheimer's while your parent is at home. Here are some tips for helping your parent while you are at home.

Go on an all natural diet

Some processed foods are believed to harm those who are going through memory loss. In order to help keep memories, you should have your parent go on an all natural diet. They should stick to foods that are not processed in any way and stay away from white sugar and processed dairy foods. If your parent loves sweets, they should make their own natural candy, cakes, and sweet treats with natural ingredients. Instead of sugar, honey or agave nectar can be used as they are lower on the glycemic index but high in sweetness.

Have them remember small things

Instead of having your parent make a list, have them recite things. For instance, if they are going to the grocery store, have them remember the list of items they need to get. Let them look at the list only to see what items they forgot. Have them remember appointments, but install reminders on their phone just in case.  Remembering small items can help to rebuild the ability to keep new memories and continue to take care of themselves.

Help them go on a schedule

In order to remember what they are supposed to be doing each hour, have your parent sit down with you and come up with a routine. The routine should remain standard on a day to day basis so that they do not get confused. The schedule should include checking all of their appliances to make sure that they are turned off and going around to secure the exits of the home in case they forgot earlier in the day. Come over regularly to makes sure that your parent is sticking to the schedule. If they need help with other health problems, hire a nurse to come to stay with them and give them a copy of your parent's schedule so that you know it is being followed.
